I’m a PhD student at a graduate school of education, studying comparative and international education with a specifically sociological focus. I have a variety of theoretical and substantive interests, reflected in the thematically haphazard nature of the posts on this blog. I’m especially interested in social theory - particularly neoinstitutional theory and Luhmannian systems theory - as well as a variety of topics in cultural and political sociology as well as the sociology of knowledge and the sociology of expertise.
I grew up in Okinawa, Japan but was educated at various US Department of Defense Dependents Schools. I later moved to Washington DC and then Boston to attend university, before moving to New York City - which I consider home - in the 1990s. After a long period working as an international student advisor and immigration specialist for various New York area universities, I recently decided to go back to school to pursue my PhD.
I currently live in Park Slope, supposedly the bloggiest neighborhood in Brooklyn - if not the entire city. Visitors to New York should come out to the Slope - don’t confine yourself to Manhattan!
I started this blog as a way of doing some public journaling on different topics - education, sociology and social theory, politics, culture, movies, and this or that - that are of interest to me. Feel free to peruse. I welcome your comments at aks7@mac.com.
