What’s the point of living in a modern industrial society if it takes 12-16 weeks to get the sofa you want?
Even though I passed into adulthood a long time ago, I have, absurdly enough, yet to buy my first honest to goodness sofa. Though it can be something of a tricky proposition in New York, finding something that will fit into that nook that’s called your apartment and at the same time won’t prompt the snickers or arched eyebrows of the style police (er, not that such opinions matter, but I’d like to think I have a modicum of taste, even if I don’t).
Well, this week – with a bubble of free time on my hands – I set out to rectify this. I perused some of the stores in Soho and managed to get a few laughs looking at the price tags on some very swanky pieces of furniture, but eventually settled on a Corona from Macy’s, on sale for what seemed to me to be the ridiculously low price of $650. ‘Corona’ sounds like one of those old electric typerwriters, and indeed this sofa has a slightly retro look. Anyway, after selecting my preferred fabric (cappucino) I was told it would take 10 weeks minimum, and more likely 12-16, before it would be delivered. That’s 3-4 months! What, is it being made by hand? Since I’m the type who gets impatient waiting more than 10 minutes for the subway to arrive, this seemed to me to be an intolerably long wait.
Well, I settled on my second favorite color and was told I could expect delivery in 4-6 weeks. I’m so looking forward to hours of snoozing and idle procrastination productive reading, done in comfort, this summer…

nice sofa. and that does seem like a ridiculously good deal.
Thanks! And with that 15% Macy’s Card discount, it’s even better (though delivery fees took some of that back…)
We’re in the process of purchasing one of those laughably high-priced sofas, 10-15 weeks later as well…
I’m hoping it’s being made by hand, for the time and money it costs. Or by elves. Our preferred color is ‘Godiva’, by the way. Cappuccino is so southern-euro. We so prefer low-country-euro..
I bought a sofa online taking the fabric swatch online at its word and ended up with a sofa that I thought was reddish-orange (cool, trust me) and ended up being orangish-red (not so cool).
Jeremy: Ouch! They should have sent you a fabric swatch before finalizing the sale. But I’m sure it’s still cool, just not as cool.
Peter: I hope you’ll consider cementing a place as one of the tastemakers of the UWS and publicly announce where and which sofa you purchased. Did you get it from Moss? Ligne Roset? ABC? Incidentally, my sofa will be in ‘pear green’ which to me sounds like something in a Vermeer still life. Or in a 1950s American living room. Whichever.
